Ministering to the inmates of the Hood County Jail

The spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of prison doors to those who are bound...

Isaiah 61:1

What is Isaiah 61 Ministries?

In January 2001, a small group of Christians gathered from churches of the Granbury Ministerial Alliance who were willing to minister in the Hood County Jail for two hours on Thursday evenings. The meetings had their ups and down, but gradually grew in strength as time went on.

That summer, the Hood County Juvenile Detention Center was built and scheduled to open in October. When the small group was invited to minister there as well, they decided a more formal organization was needed. As a result, in October 2001, Isaiah 61 Ministries was born.

The juvenile facility has since closed, but Isaiah 61 Ministries continues to grow and the need for ministers is constant. We encourage you to join our team as, through Jesus, we... preach good tidings to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of prison doors to those who are bound...

What kind of commitment is required

All Isaiah 61 Ministers need to first and foremost be committed to Jesus. That accomplished, the rest is easy! You Must:
Be willing to work together with other Isaiah 61 Ministers, jailers, and officers within the facility

Follow the rules of the facility and of the ministry

Be faithful to come(on time) when you are scheduled. Weekly schedules are provided. You may choose to be scheduled anywhere from one week each month to four. You are welcome to come on weeks that you are not scheduled but are not obligated.

What should I expect in the facility

Isaiah 61 ministers at the Hood County Jail on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00. We meet in the lobby to pray at 6:45 pm and begin ministering when the guards escort us into the "pods" or cells at 7:00 pm.

Men minister in the men's' tanks, and women minister in the women's tanks. Each person is in a different pod. We talk to anywhere from one to ten inmates at a time, depending on how many in the pod choose to participate. We have the liberty to teach, preach, sing - whatever the Holy Spirit leads us to do - within the guidelines set by the facility. Some prefer to spend the entire time in one pod with the same group of inmates, while others like to spend a little time in each pod. As long as we all work together, we are free to move around as we need to.

Around 9:00 pm the guards escort us back out to the lobby and we are finished for the evening.

How do I sign up?

First, you must be at least 21 years old. We will need a letter from your pastor that states your good standing and commitment to you local church. Next, you will fill out an application form for the Hood County Jail that provides them with the information that they need to do a background check.

We will send a copy of your drivers license and your completed application to the jail where a background check is done. This usually takes about two weeks. When we receive word that you are approved, we will notify you. You can start coming that week and will be scheduled the next time the schedule is made.
